The winter solstice is an annual astronomical event when the Sun is at its minimum altitude above the horizon, that is, lowest relative to the Earth's horizon. The hemisphere where the winter solstice occurs has the shortest daylight hours and longest night of the year.
After the winter solstice, in each subsequent day, the day will be added in time, and the night will decrease until the summer solstice. Therefore, this day is the beginning of the astronomical New Year.
It is also considered to be one of the most powerful events of the year and in ancient times it was given great importance. This holiday was dedicated to the Sun and its annual cycle. It was believed that before this day everything dies and then everything is born again.
This day was celebrated very vividly in many traditions of the world. For example, they made wishes and performed many rituals to attract health, happiness and prosperity to their homes for the whole year.
In Ukraine, before the advent of Christianity, this day was celebrated as the holiday of Kolyada, from the word Kolo - the beginning of a new circle (new year).
Before this holiday they put the house in order and dressed it up, and by Veserom they made a party where the whole family and relatives gathered, 12 dishes, like 12 months, sang carols and treated each other.
