According to the newspaper, British government data analyzed by the environmental news site Desmog shows that imports of refined oil from India, China, and Turkey amount to 2.2 billion pounds in 2023. This is a record figure. As an example, in 2021, oil worth £434.2 million was imported.
The Guardian explains that Russia is the largest supplier of crude oil to India and China, and Turkey has become one of the largest importers of Russian oil after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In response to the invasion in 2022, Ukraine's allies pledged to cut off supplies of Russian oil and gas. The UK officially banned imports of Russian oil products on December 5, 2022. However, a loophole in the legislation allowed Russian oil to continue to flow to the UK.
