NATO: Underwater "hybrid warfare" threatens the security of 1 billion people

The security of almost 1 billion people in Europe and North America is at risk due to russia's attempts to find vulnerabilities in underwater infrastructure, wind farms, pipelines and power cables. According to The Guardian, one of NATO's commanders, Didier Malet, warned about this, UNN reports.

Details

Admiral Didier Malet, deputy commander of NATO's Allied Maritime Command, has spoken out about the vulnerability of undersea infrastructure, following suspected sabotage of gas pipelines. He warned that the safety of nearly a billion people in Europe and North America is at risk due to russia's actions targeting vulnerabilities in facilities such as wind farms, pipelines and electrical cables.

He added that the network of undersea cables and pipes on which Europe's electricity and communications depend was not built to withstand the "hybrid warfare" waged by Moscow and other NATO adversaries.

We know that the russians have launched a lot of hybrid warfare underwater to undermine the European economy with cables, internet cables, pipelines. Our entire economy is under water and threatened. And to be very clear, we know what the Russians have developed in terms of nuclear submarines to operate underwater. So we are not naive, and we are working together

- He said.

He said that despite the growing role of offshore wind power in meeting climate goals, the infrastructure still has "system vulnerabilities". According to the industry association WindEurope, offshore wind power will need to grow by 25% by 2050 to meet EU wind capacity targets, while the Biden administration wants to deploy 30,000 megawatts of offshore wind power along the US coast by 2030.

Now we are paying special attention to the russians, but it is very difficult to constantly monitor every telegram, it is impossible. Many countries - Norway, Sweden, Denmark - have developed drones, sensors, UUVs  to be able to detect something suspicious or something going wrong very quickly. And when we talk about aggression, we obviously think about russia

- He added.

Recall

Six North Sea countries have signed an agreement to ensure common security standards to protect critical underwater infrastructure, such as energy pipelines and cables, from foreign sabotage and attack.
