The quake partially destroyed four buildings. The aftershocks were aftershocks from a 7.4 magnitude quakethat struck Taiwan three weeks ago, the authorities said, which was the strongest in 25 years and killed 17 people.
The tremors began just after 5:00 p.m. local time on Monday with a magnitude 5.5 earthquake in Hualien County on Taiwan's east coast. It was followed by a series of smaller tremors a few minutes later in the same area.
Four buildings in Hualien county partially collapsed, some residents were evacuated, and schools and offices in the county were ordered to close on Tuesday due to the threat of continued aftershocks, local media reported. As of Tuesday morning, there were no reports of injuries or deaths.
As of Tuesday morning, according to the Central Meteorological Administration, more than 180 aftershocks had been recorded over the previous 24 hours. The strongest of these occurred at 2:26 a.m., with a magnitude of 6, off Taiwan's east coast, and at 2:32 a.m., with a magnitude of 6.3, about 10 miles from Hualien County. According to the Central Meteorological Administration, the last strong aftershock occurred around 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
