In 11 months of 2023, 55 cases of measles and 5 localized outbreaks were registered in Ukraine; a catch-up vaccination campaign was launched.

In the first 11 months of this year, 55 cases of measles were registered in Ukraine, 31 of which were among children under the age of 17. In total, 5 point outbreaks of measles were recorded, which did not develop into mass diseases. UNN reports this with reference to the Ministry of Health.

The disease has been reported in 13 regions and the capital. Most cases:

  • in Ternopil region - 12,
  • in Kyiv - 10,
  • in Lviv region - 7.

"Among the children who fell ill with measles in 2023, 12% had no vaccination, 30% had only one, and in 20% of cases there was no information about vaccination," the report says.

The Ministry of Health also reported that Ukraine recorded 5 point outbreaks of measles in 2023, which were localized and did not develop into mass diseases. A nationwide catch-up vaccination campaign was organized in the summer. In 3 months, 153 thousand children caught up with their scheduled vaccinations.

"Now the vaccine is available in every region. It is free of charge. To be vaccinated according to the National Vaccination Schedule (at 12 months and 6 years) or to catch up on missed vaccinations, please contact your pediatrician or family doctor," the Ministry of Health noted.

The Kyiv City State Administration reported that there is a real danger of a repeat of the measles epidemic, because, according to infectious disease experts, measles is cyclical, and mass diseases usually occur every 5-6 years. In addition, there is an increase in the incidence of measles in neighboring countries.
