Apple has acquired DarwinAI, a Canadian company that specializes in monitoring manufacturing components and optimizing AI models to increase production efficiency and potentially enable the creation of AI on iOS 18 devices.

Neither Apple nor DarwinAI announced the deal, but according to their LinkedIn profiles, several members of the startup's team joined Apple's machine learning teams back in January.
According to Bloomberg, in addition to helping to improve manufacturing efficiency, DarwinAI uses methods to make AI models smaller and faster. This could be useful for generating AI on a device that Apple hopes to introduce in iOS 18 this year.
Apple is lagging behind in releasing features based on generative AI compared to competitors such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft. In February, Tim Cook said that the company plans to introduce such features "later this year.
