Finland plans to close all border checkpoints with russia except Raja-Josepi, and according to Finnish Deputy Chancellor of Justice Mikko, there are no legal obstacles to this decision. The northernmost border crossing point, Raja-Josepi, remains open for four hours every day.

The Deputy Chancellor of Justice assessed the draft decision and the draft memorandum submitted today's draft decision and draft memorandum from the point of view of legality. A confidential memorandum on the subject is also available. Based on the documents, there are no legal obstacles to further preparation of the proposed decision on the merits.

Details

The only open checkpoint on the Finnish-russian border will remain Raja-Josepi. According to the proposed project, the government wants to close all checkpoints on the eastern border except for this one.  Raja-Josepi is located in the municipality of Inari, and is the northernmost border crossing point in Finland. It is currently open daily for four hours.

According to HS, the council is ready to make decision on additional border restrictions as early as today, after the evening school council meeting that started at five o'clock. However, in the evening school, the council cannot decide on this issue, but decisions must be made at the session.

Context

Last week, the government decided to close  the four southernmost crossing points on the eastern border. They were Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra and Niirala, located in southeastern Finland.

There are a total of eight checkpoints on the eastern border. border crossing points. With the decision on Wednesday evening, Salla, Kuusamo and Vartius will also be will also be closed.

The deputy head of the Border Guard of Lapland Border Guard Ville Ahtiainen tells HS that the Raja-Joosepi border station is not yet equipped to possibly become the only checkpoint on the eastern border.

"So far, it's just talk, we don't have a a specific task. We will implement the government's decision, and if it changes, it will change," Ahtiainen summarizes.

Ahtiainen describes Raja-Josep as a quiet border crossing point border crossing point with only a few dozen people a week.
