The measures will affect 32 consulate employees who must leave the country if they do not have German citizenship. The reaction to the execution was harsher than expected, Tagesschau notes.

Sharmahd, who had German and Iranian citizenship, was kidnapped by Iranian intelligence services during a layover in Dubai in 2020. Tehran calls him the leader of the Tondar opposition group, which is recognized as a "terrorist" group in Iran. In 2023, the Iranian Supreme Court sentenced him to death on charges of "terrorism". The verdict was strongly condemned by the authorities of Germany and the European Union. Sharmahd was executed on the morning of October 28.
