Germany plans to deploy about 5,000 troops in Lithuania, which will be a historic step for the defense of NATO's eastern flank, and a full-fledged brigade will be deployed by 2027.

Germany plans to send about five thousand troops to Lithuania to strengthen the defense of NATO's eastern flank. This was reported by DW, according to UNN.

Details

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anušauskas signed a roadmap in Vilnius to deploy a Bundeswehr brigade of about 5,000 troops to Lithuania.

"Pistorius emphasized that this was "uncharted territory for the Bundeswehr" because Germany had not previously permanently deployed troops and military bases outside the country, while Anusauskas said it was a "historic decision." They reaffirmed their commitment to "defend each other and every inch of the alliance's territory," the newspaper writes.

The brigade will be based on battalions from Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia. The infrastructure for the brigade is planned to be built in Rudninkai, near Vilnius, and in Rukla, near Kaunas.

Soldiers will be able to bring their families to the new base, and they want to open German-language schools and kindergartens there. By 2027, the German combat brigade in the republic should be fully operational.

Recall

In the summer, Pistorius said that Germany plans to send four thousand troops to Lithuania to strengthen the defense of NATO's eastern flank.
