Context

Haiti has not had elected representatives since early 2023, and the next elections will be the first since 2016. Henry, who is seen by many Haitians as corrupt, has repeatedly postponed the elections, saying that security must be restored first.

Henry has not been in Haiti since last week, while violence by criminal gangs, which according to the UN already control about 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince, has escalated, with an alliance of powerful groups demanding Henry's resignation.

Recall

The Haitian government has declared a state of emergency and a curfew in Port-au-Prince after thousands of prisoners escaped from the national prison after it was stormed by armed gangs.
