"Franco-German relations have never been in such a bad state as they are now. The Federal Chancellor's apparent lack of desire to move Europe forward together with France is shocking," said CDU foreign policy expert Armin Lasche.

Anton Hofreiter, a Green politician and chairman of the Bundestag's European Affairs Committee, also called on the federal chancellor to resolve his differences with Macron.

"I expect Chancellor Scholz to use this meeting to smooth out the differences between him and Macron. The EU needs to act as one in the face of the difficult security situation," Hofreiter said.

The leaders of the "Weimar Triangle" (France, Germany and Poland) are meeting in Berlin on Friday to discuss assistance to Ukraine. According to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the countries should do everything possible to support Ukraine more.
