The death toll from the unexpected eruption of Indonesia's Marapi volcano has risen to 23, and rescuers are struggling in dangerous conditions.

Details

More than 50 climbers were rescued after the first eruption on Sunday, and 11 more were initially confirmed dead. Another eruption on Monday sent a new burst of hot ash up to 800 meters  and temporarily suspended search operations.

According to the deputy police chief of West Sumatra Deputy Police Chief Edi Mardianto, the last bodies were found near the eruption site. The bodies of five climbers were found, and 18 are presumed dead because they were very close to the eruption of hot gases and ash.

The remaining 18 people we want to evacuate are expect that they are no longer alive. Tomorrow or today the team will evacuate them and will take them to the hospital for identification," Mardianto said.

As a reminder

The volcanic eruption in Indonesia occurred on Sunday, December 3. At the same time, 11 climbers were reported dead after being caught off guard by the eruption on the volcano.
