Restoration of Okhmatdyt: about UAH 400 million needed for priority equipment only, total losses are still being calculated

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine reports that about 400 million hryvnias will be needed for equipment alone to restore the Okhmatdyt children's hospital after the Russian missile attack, and the total damage is still being calculated.

The list of priority equipment includes more than 55 nomenclature items (242 pieces of equipment in total) with an estimated value of UAH 400 million

According to the Ministry of Health, work is already underway to restore critical medical services at Okhmatdyt. First of all, it is about operating rooms, intensive care units, and pediatric oncology, ophthalmology, urology, and neurosurgery departments that are to be launched in the hospital's newest building.

"Although it was also damaged during the Russian missile attack on July 8, restoration work inside the premises, preparation for glazing and restoration of the facade, is already underway. A plan has also been developed to relocate these departments," the Health Ministry said.

In addition, as indicated, a list of medical equipment has been compiled to resume the provision of essential medical services.

Reportedly, thanks to the government and philanthropists, as of the evening of July 11, more than UAH 470 million has been raised on the official charity accounts of Okhmatdyt, which will allow the start of priority reconstruction work.

As mentioned above, three areas have already been identified in which the funds raised will be used:

  • restoration of damaged premises; 
  • creating opportunities to provide critical medical services;
  • construction of a new building to replace the destroyed and damaged emergency buildings.

At the same time, work is reportedly underway to comprehensively assess the damage. "Next week we expect the first defect report on the damage to the newly constructed building of the Okhmatdyt, which is to be used to provide medical care in the first instance. After that, Okhmatdyt will announce a call for bids for the restoration work. After selecting an expert organization, the start date and duration of the work will be clear," the Health Ministry explained.

At the same time, as noted, the process of inspecting Okhmatdyt facilities that belong to the city's cultural heritage is underway, as well as technical inspections of other damaged buildings. "After these inspections are completed, we will be able to start designing a new building to replace the destroyed and critically damaged buildings. Experts are already preparing a medical task that precedes the design work," the Health Ministry added.
