The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has suspended the membership of the Russian National Badminton Federation (NFBR). The decision was made at the the BWF Council meeting in November. It was found that the Russian Federation violated the terms of membership in the organization, the BWF announced on Thursday, November 30.

It was established that the Russian Badminton Federation violates the terms of membership of the BWF governing organisation by including in its jurisdiction territories that fall under the jurisdiction of another member, as recognised by the international community. These are the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia.

The decision must be confirmed by the members of the organisation at the 2024 Annual General Meeting in Chengdu, China. At the same time, the process that allows players with Russian passports to participate in BWF-sanctioned tournaments as "independent neutral athletes" remains in place.

BWF banned performances of Russian and Belarusian athletes in March 2022 after a full-scale Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Regarding Belarus, it is noted that the country is used as a key springboard for Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which Moscow calls "special operation".
