Stefanishyna: The draft law on national minorities has clear safeguards against the language of the aggressor state

Government officials, together with parliamentarians, have finalized a bill to amend certain laws regarding the rights of national minorities. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna and emphasized that the document contains clear safeguards against the state language, UNN reports.

Stefanishyna noted that together with parliamentarians, they finalized the bill submitted by the government to the Verkhovna Rada on amendments to some laws regarding the rights of national minorities (communities). Proper implementation of the framework legislation is impossible without amending special legislation. That is why, taking into account international practices, recommendations of the Venice Commission and in consultation with national communities, a package of amendments to a number of laws was prepared.

The draft law in no way envisaged a revision of the existing rules on the language of the aggressor state. This has always been a principled position for us. However, in order to allay any fears and reservations, working together with parliamentarians and members of the public, we have further strengthened the safeguards. As for the rights of national communities, all the provisions of the draft law have been preserved

According to her, "today we have a good draft law agreed between the factions, which leaves no room for ambiguity."

"I believe that the break with the Russian-Soviet heritage is final and irrevocable. And the best guarantee of this is our integration into the EU. I am sure there can be no disagreement here," Stefanishyna summarized.

The Verkhovna Rada adopted draft law No. 9610 on amendments to the law "On National Minorities (Communities) of Ukraine" on some issues of realization of rights and freedoms of persons belonging to national minorities (communities) of Ukraine.
