Ukraine calls on Venezuela to comply with the ruling of the International Court of Justice on the Essequibo region, warning against actions that could escalate the dispute.

Ukraine calls on Venezuela to comply with the legally binding order of the International Court of Justice and to refrain from any actions that will change the situation in the Essequibo region. This is stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, UNN reports.

Details 

The Ministry emphasizes that on December 1, 2023, the International Court of Justice issued an order for the application of provisional measures in the case of the Arbitral Award of October 3, 1899 (Guyana v. Venezuela). 

The order obliges Venezuela to refrain from any action that would change the situation in the Essequibo region, and both parties to refrain from any action that could aggravate or expand the dispute or complicate its resolution. 

Ukraine emphasizes the need to comply with the legally binding judgments of the International Court of Justice. Any disputes and disagreements should be resolved only on the basis of the mechanisms provided for by international law, in accordance with the purposes and principles set forth in the UN Charter.

Addendum 

The ministry added that the parties to the dispute should comply with the legally binding order of the International Court of Justice on the application of provisional measures and not take unilateral actions that could worsen the situation.
