World Penguin Day, International DNA Day. What else can be celebrated on April 25

Today, on April 25, animal rights activists and wildlife lovers around the world are joining various events to mark World Penguin Day, UNN reports.

The event is dedicated to the beginning of the traditional penguin migration for breeding.

According to scientists, penguins appeared on our planet about 23 million years ago. The first written mention of penguins dates back to 1487, when an unknown traveler wrote in his diary about birds that cannot fly, swim well, and live near the Cape of Good Hope.

Currently, there are 16 species of penguins. The largest representative of these birds is the emperor penguin: its height reaches 120 centimeters and its weight is 40 kilograms.

The weight of the smallest penguins does not exceed 2.5 kilograms.

Penguins are monogamous birds and choose a permanent mate.

According to various scientists, there are up to seven million pairs of penguins in the world today.

At the same time, there is a steady downward trend in the penguin population. With increasing pollution levels and rising temperatures due to global warming, many species are at risk. All penguin species are facing challenges due to changes in their ecosystem, such as overfishing.

On April 25, 1953, the journal Nature published a short article by English scientists Francis Crick and James Watson, titled "The Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids.

Since 2003, it was decided to celebrate International DNA Day on April 25.

The molecular structure of DNA stores genetic information. The discovery of the DNA helix made it possible to establish hereditary relationships, identify genetic risks, develop genetic engineering technologies, and more.

If we collect one DNA molecule from all the people on the planet, these molecules can fit into one teaspoon and weigh about 1.2 grams.  

Another important holiday today related to medicine and human health is World Malaria Day.

Malaria is a serious infectious parasitic disease transmitted by female malaria mosquitoes. Symptoms: nausea, fever, headache, bloody diarrhea, anemia, etc.

Despite significant advances in the treatment and prevention of malaria, the disease continues to threaten 40% of the world's population, according to the WHO. Every year, more than 500 million people on our planet get sick with malaria, and more than one million people die from the disease.

Most malaria cases and deaths are recorded in Africa.

Parental alienation is the process by which a child becomes distant from a parent as a result of psychological manipulation by the other parent. Over time, this can lead to serious emotional and psychological consequences for the child, affecting his or her well-being and development. This problem most often affects divorced families.

Even today, on the last Thursday of April, various events are taking place in many countries to mark the Day of Girls in Information and Communication Technologies.

According to research, in many cases, it is gender stereotypes that stop girls from choosing technical specialties: lack of self-confidence and self-reliance.

The goal of the holiday is to empower women's rights, attract girls to study and work in the field of information and communication technologies, and destroy gender-related myths.

According to the church calendar, today is the Day of Remembrance of the Apostle and Evangelist Mark.

Mark was a companion of the apostles Peter and Paul, and the disciples of Christ gathered and prayed in his house.

Later, Mark settled in Alexandria and became the local bishop. His house was attacked by pagans. They severely beat Mark and threw him into prison. The saint did not live to see the trial because he died of his wounds.
