An attempt to help Putin with words, not deeds - a political analyst on Lukashenko's statement about preparations for war

The statement by the self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, that Minsk is preparing troops for possible hostilities may be another ISIS in an attempt to help Putin with words, not deeds. Lukashenko also voices his fears, as he is afraid of war and loss of power. These opinions were expressed to UNN by international political scientist Maksym Yali and political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko.

"This is not Lukashenka's first statement in the last two years since the start of the full-scale invasion, but as we can see, nothing happened because Belarus does not have sufficient military potential to significantly add power to the Russian army," Yali said.

He also noted that the idea of a war with Ukraine is absolutely unpopular in Belarusian society and could cause protests.

Therefore, when Russia needed help during the successful counteroffensive of the Ukrainian military in 2022, Lukashenko did not do it, and he probably will not do it now. This statement is probably due to a request from Putin. He usually does this to stretch the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to keep a sufficient number of brigades on the northern border, so that they cannot be moved to hotter areas of the front. That is, it can be said that this is another IPSO by Lukashenko in an attempt to help Putin with words, not deeds

- Yali said.

Yali also commented on the timing of Lukashenko's statement that Minsk was preparing troops for possible hostilities.

"We now see that information is being thrown into the information space that Russia is allegedly preparing a new offensive, and it is against this background (Lukashenko's statement - ed.) that this statement was made to add tension and distract the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the north," he said.

Political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko, commenting on Lukashenko's statement, noted that the latter should be taken into account, taking into account his specifics.

"Let's take Lukashenko into account the specifics of Lukashenko. His schizophrenia and paranoia. In this case, Lukashenko is voicing his own fears. He says that Belarus is ready to seize the Suwalki corridor, and at the same time, that Belarus does not want war. This is the whole Lukashenko. He can say one thing yesterday and the exact opposite tomorrow. This is the specificity of Lukashenko's style, this duality. He tries to play with everyone, with Putin, with the West to a lesser extent, sometimes even with China," Fesenko believes.

According to him, Lukashenko is creating room for maneuver around him in this way, as he sees it.

On the other hand, he voices his fears, he is afraid of war. Because he realizes that if the war comes to the territory of Belarus, he will lose power... He sees how Putin is behaving, that Putin's hysteria and aggression have increased significantly, and he sees that no one will respond to Putin's ultimatums, and so he fears that Putin might do something stupid. He might force him to participate in military operations again, for example. So he is sending this signal just in case, because he does not want to go to war and is afraid of it. He cares about his power

- Fesenko said.
