Poland has detained four people suspected of involvement in testing a Russian plan to detonate bombs in parcels on transatlantic flights bound for the United States. The arrest is related to the suspected fire last July at a DHL warehouse in Birmingham, central England. A parcel caught fire there. A similar incident occurred in Germany. Germany said last month that it narrowly avoided a plane crash when a package destined for the hold of an airplane caught fire before it took off at a DHL logistics center in Leipzig.
British and German intelligence services suspected Russia of involvement in these attacks.
Warsaw and the UK counter-terrorism police have launched an investigation. As part of an international investigation launched in August and coordinated with other European countries, Polish prosecutors today announced four suspects. The investigation is ongoing, but international arrest warrants have already been issued for two more people allegedly involved in the parcel bombing plot.
Polish prosecutors said on October 25 that the latest arrests were related to parcels that “spontaneously burst into flames or exploded during ground and air transportation” to EU countries and the United Kingdom.
