The police detained a previously convicted man who was carrying two Kalashnikov assault rifles wrapped in a blanket. The suspect faces up to seven years in prison for illegal handling of weapons.

In Odesa region, a man was walking around a village with two assault rifles, he was detained, the suspect faces up to seven years in prison for illegal handling of weapons, the regional police reported on Saturday, UNN reports.

Police officers reportedly stopped a man near one of the railway stations in the evening who was carrying two Kalashnikov assault rifles wrapped in a blanket. 

Dangerous items were seized from him, the origin of which he refused to explain. As part of the criminal proceedings, they were sent for examination. According to the preliminary conclusion of the experts, the seized weapons are firearms.  

The offender, who has several convictions for fraud and theft, was detained and served a notice of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. It is about illegal acquisition, carrying, storage of firearms without a legal permit. The issue of choosing a custody as a form of detention is currently being decided. Under the current legislation, the offender faces up to seven years in prison.

The origin of the weapon will be established during the investigation.
