During a regional tournament in the Chilca district of the Huancayo province in Peru, where local teams were playing, the game was canceled in the 22nd minute due to thunder.
Huancayo is a highland region located at an altitude of 10,659 feet above sea level. Just as the referee announced the game was canceled, 39-year-old football player Jose Hugo de la Cruz Mesa was struck by lightning and died instantly.
His colleague, goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta, was also injured by a direct lightning strike and taken to the hospital with burns.
Two teenagers aged 16 and 19 and a 24-year-old man were also injured. They are in stable condition.
