Ukrainian schoolchildren show deterioration in PISA-2022 results

Today the results of the PISA-2022 - an international study of the quality of education. They assessed the ability of 15-year-old students to apply knowledge and skills in reading, math and science subjects. According to all indicators, Ukrainian students have suffered educational losses. UNN reports this with reference to the Ministry of of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Mathematical literacy

Ukrainian students'  results in mathematical literacy have deteriorated. literacy deteriorated by 12 points compared to the previous study in 2018. 

58% of Ukrainian students reached the basic, second out of six, levels of math literacy, 32% of students level 3 and higher.

Reading literacy

In reading, Ukrainian students showed a 38-point drop in reading scores compared to the 2018 study. 59% of students reached the basic level in reading, 29% - level 3 and higher. On average Ukrainian students lag behind OECD students in reading by about two and a and a half years of schooling according to PISA standards.

On average, according to PISA 2022, in all countries, including those of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, there was an unprecedented drop in in all subject areas of study.  This  has been attributed to the with the COVID-19 pandemic and prolonged distance learning. The PISA results showed various factors that affect academic performance:

-         There is a significant gender gap in apprenticeship outcomes. Boys are by 10 points ahead of girls in math, and girls are 23 points ahead of boys in reading. boys by 23 points (over a year of study). At the same time, in the natural sciences there is almost no difference.

-         The study showed a significant decrease in the level of bullying among students when compared to compared to 2018: the difference is 7.6 percentage points.
