The CEC of Moldova has released preliminary results of the vote count in the second round of the presidential election in the country, according to which the current President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, won, UNN reports.

Details

According to the preliminary information of the CEC, the results obtained by the candidates participating in the election race for the post of President of the Republic of Moldova are as follows:

  • Maia Sandu - more than 930 thousand voters or 55.41%;
  • Oleksandr Stoyanoglo - received over 748 thousand votes, which is 44.59%.

The Electoral Code stipulates that the candidate who receives the largest number of votes in the second round of voting is recognized as elected.

According to preliminary data, 1,699,025 voters, or 54.31% of those on the electoral roll, took part in the election.

According to the Moldovan edition of NewsMaker, Maia Sandu won the presidential election in Moldova, becoming the first head of state in the country's history to be re-elected for a second term in direct elections. Sandu's final margin of victory was about 11%.

At the same time, the publication notes that, unlike in 2020, it managed to do so only thanks to the voices of the Moldovan diaspora.

Ukraine's reaction

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Maia Sandu on her election victory.

“I congratulate Maia Sandu on her victory in the presidential elections in Moldova. Ukraine supports the European choice of the people of Moldova and is ready to work together to strengthen our partnership. The citizens of Moldova have made a clear choice - they have chosen the path to economic growth and social stability. Only true security and a peaceful, united Europe can guarantee every person and every family the opportunity to face tomorrow with hope and confidence,” Zelensky wrote in X.

The world's reaction

Sanda was also congratulated on her victory in the EU and in the bloc's countries.

“Congratulations, dear President Maia Sandu, on your victory in the presidential elections in Moldova. [The people of Moldova have reaffirmed their trust in your leadership, stability and commitment to a European future,” European Council President Charles Michel said in a statement on X.

The President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili also reacted, stating in X that “the elections in Moldova are the best ‘proof’ of the stolen elections in Georgia: despite similar Russian interference and massive fraud, Moldova was saved by 300,000 diaspora voters... Our 1,000,000 strong diaspora was banned. Only 34,000 were “allowed” to vote.
