Ukraine rises in global rankings of iron and steel producers

In the first half of 2024, Ukraine increased iron production by 22.25% and steel production by 36.96% year-on-year. This allowed the country to rise to 13th place among iron producers and 21st place among steel producers in the world.
In the first half of 2024, Ukraine smelted 3.47 million tons of iron and 3.87 million tons of steel, which is more than last year. Ukrmetallurgprom writes about this with reference to Worldsteel data, UNN reports.

It is noted that in January-June 2024, metallurgical enterprises of the world produced 704.01 million tons of pig iron. This is 1.79% lower than in January-June 2023 (716.83 million tons).
The People's Republic of China produces the largest amount of pig iron, with its metallurgists producing 435.62 million tons of pig iron in January-June 2024, down 3.60% from January-June 2023 (451.89 million tons). The share of Chinese pig iron in world production for 6 months of 2024 is 61.9%.
With 3.47 million tons smelted (122.25% compared to January-June 2023), Ukraine moved up from 14th to 13th position among 40 pig iron producing countries.

Global steel production in January-June 2024 amounted to 954.62 million tons, which is 0.01% lower than in January-June 2023 (954.74 million tons).
The leader here is also the People's Republic of China, which produced 530.57 million tons, which is 1.10% lower than in the same period in 2023 (536.47 million tons). China's share in global steel production is 55.6%.
Ukraine smelted 3.87 million tons of steel (up 136.96% compared to January-June 2023), rising from 22nd to 21st place among 71 steel-producing countries.

In April, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises increased production of iron by 25%, steel by 33%, and rolled products by 30.5% in April compared to the same period last year.
